These foods are advertised as great breakfast because they are packed with essential nutrients that can give anyone enough energy throughout their day.

There are two types of cereals in the market: the ready-to-eat (RTE) ones (also known as cold cereals), and the ones that need to be cooked (also known as hot cereals).

RTE (ready-to-eat) cereals are commonly seen in boxes or packages that can be eaten as it is or with some milk or yogurt of your choice.

They are often crunchy and sweet and have been advertised mainly for kids as an ideal breakfast to give them essential nutrients and energy all throughout the day.

Cereals that need cooking are often oats and wheat. You need to boil some water then add them to it. Stir for several minutes before it can be served with milk or yogurt, nuts, fruits, or syrup.

These types of cereals are often advertised mainly to adults for their health benefits and easy-to-prepare meals.

For me, I both enjoy eating cold and hot cereals at any time of the day.

Sometimes, I enjoy eating cold cereals as a snack and hot cereals to warm and fill me up for breakfast.

Their sweet taste and unique texture in my mouth make me enjoy every spoonful I eat. Also, they both gave me a kick-start of my energy to get through my entire day.

You see, carbohydrates in this food gave us a ton of energy supply thus, they’re ideal to be eaten in the morning when you needed the most.

Why do we eat cereal for breakfast?

They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day because you need a ton of energy for the things you need to do the entire day.

People enjoy eating breakfast cereals because it’s loaded with carbohydrates that’ll pump up their body with enough energy for their day.

Carbohydrates are made by plants in the process called photosynthesis.

Plants use the sun’s energy to convert it to carbohydrates that they use for their own survival.

In animals and humans, carbohydrates from plant sources are eaten so that they can be converted as a source of energy.

Animals, as well as humans, cannot create carbohydrates as plants do. So, it is not surprising that we, together with other animals, eat plants to get carbohydrates as our source of energy.

In fact, ancient people realized the importance of plants in our lives thus, agriculture was developed eventually.

According to the history of agriculture, grains were domesticated in the Neolithic Age when people decided to settle down permanently in an area and started farming.

Since then, the idea of carbohydrate consumption grew until the present time.

Moreover, in the time of Sylvester Graham, he promoted that eating a plant-based diet (also known as vegetarianism) will have more health benefits.

Aside from carbohydrate sources, plants are high in fiber which is good for digestion.

They also contain various vitamins and minerals which are essential in human overall health and proper functioning.

Since then, several people were inspired to consume more plants than ever.

James Caleb Jackson, one who was inspired by Sylvester Graham, created “granula” from graham flour as a plant-based snack but it didn’t gain popularity.

On the other hand, John Harvey Kellogg developed his own version of granula and called it “granola”.

At first, it’s not sweet like we know, but with his brother’s, Will Kellogg, suggestion to add sugar, it gained its well-deserved popularity.

From there, the evolution of cereal history started and become popular, especially in the trying time of World War.

During the time of World War, nutrient deficiencies of vitamins and minerals are seen among kids.

This led scientists and health advocates to create a nutritious food that kids will love thus, cereals were born.

What are the main nutrients found in cereals?

Cereals’ original aim is to cure nutrient deficiencies among children during World War thus, scientists made sure that they contain carbohydrates, fiber, vitamins, and minerals needed by the human body.

Even though cereals are packed with “good” things, always put in mind that they are still highly processed food.

Eating highly processed food is not good for our health even though they contain various nutrients that we need.

It is true that they can both fill you up and satisfy your hunger while getting the “nutrients” out of it but, added chemicals and preservatives are also included in what you eat.

Processed food requires a lot of unnatural additives to make it fresh longer and to make it more palatable than the fresh ones.

Eating cereals are not bad when taken in moderation.

How are cereals made?

Cereals are made after grains were harvested, cooked, formed, dried, texturized, fortified with additives and preservatives, and packed.

In the factory, texturizing is the one that makes our cereals highly processed.

Puffing, flaking, shredding, and extrusion of cooked grains will be done to make cereals crispy, crunchy, and enjoyable to eat.

Advanced machinery, monitored temperature, and the right amount of necessary ingredients mixed in the cooked grains are important to make the right texture.

With that being said, natural complex carbohydrates found in healthy grains are turned into refined ones.

What is refined carbohydrates?

Refined carbohydrates are also known as simple carbohydrates. These are formed after several processes of breaking down complex carbohydrates into simpler forms.

Complex carbohydrates found in plants are healthy because they are rich in fiber and natural vitamins and minerals.

Moreover, complex carbohydrates are not readily absorbed in humans making them a great companion if you have digestion problems.

When a complex carbohydrate is broken down into its simpler form, you may think of it as a “great” idea so that we can readily absorb it into our bodies.

But it’s not.

Simple carbohydrates can indeed increase our energy level in a snap, but they can also alter our metabolism.

When simple carbohydrates are too much in our bodies, our blood sugar will rise and may lead to metabolic disorders like diabetes.

Metabolic disorders are medical conditions where our bodies’ normal metabolism is nowhere to be found.

In short, there is a malfunction.

When our body malfunctions, it’ll be a domino effect that will lead to different diseases in the long run.

How much cereal can you eat a day?

You can still enjoy your cereals like I do but in moderation. Eating cereals more or less 30 grams a day will do as long as you control other carbohydrate intakes.

Anything you consume too much is bad for your health.

In my own experience, I always look into it how much carbohydrates I intake for the day.

I check it by limiting adding sugar in my coffee, controlling the amount of rice I cook, and the number of snacks I eat.

As for my cereal intake, I usually cook 3 spoonfuls of oats then add milk to it. Then for my snack, I usually eat 1-2 bars of granola whenever the need for energy arises.

I eat until I am already happy and satisfied, not to the extent that will indulge myself with food, especially with processed ones.
